The Story Behind The Boots
The Cretan Stivania
Our logo features the traditional Cretan stivania (στιβάνια) boot—a powerful symbol of the island of Crete.
Historically, the stivania was worn by Cretan warriors—including James's grandfather—who defended the island through centuries of conflict and foreign occupation. Built to withstand Crete's rugged mountains, these boots became closely associated with the courage, determination, and independence of the Cretan people. Today, they remain one of the most recognizable symbols of Cretan identity and are proudly worn during traditional celebrations, dances, and cultural events.
We chose the stivania as the symbol of Boutz Cellars because it represents the values that have been passed down through generations of our family. These boots honor those who came before us and serves as a reminder that our heritage continues to shape everything we do—from the way we farm our vineyards to the wines we share around the table.
